On April 1, 2016, the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) began distributing Terra Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data products over the entire globe at no charge. Previously, only select products over the United States and its Territories and a global elevation product were publicly available.

The ASTER sensor was launched on December 18, 1999 on Terra, NASA’s first Earth Observing System (EOS) satellite. ASTER is a partnership between NASA, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan, and Japan Space Systems (J-spacesystems).
